Building your runway
Runway is Climb's name for being a month ahead: a set-aside fund that can pay for next month entirely, before next month's income exists. It's the calmest place a budget can be, and Climb helps you build it a little at a time.
Why a month ahead changes everything
When this month's bills are paid by money you earned last month, timing stops mattering. A late paycheck is an inconvenience, not an emergency. Every bill is funded on the 1st. You stop budgeting paycheck to paycheck and start budgeting month to month.
How it builds
After you've been budgeting for about a month, Climb offers to start your runway. From there:
- Set a target: roughly one month of expenses. Climb suggests one from what you actually budget; you can adjust it.
- Set aside when there's slack. Extra money in Available to Budget, a windfall, a lighter month: park it in the runway instead of letting it drift. Progress shows on a banner right on the budget page.
- Borrow it back if you must. The runway isn't locked away. A rough month can borrow from it; you're building a cushion, not a cage.
Release: the payoff
When the runway reaches its target, you release it, and that money funds next month's entire budget. From then on the cycle sustains itself: income that arrives this month simply becomes next month's runway. You're permanently a month ahead as long as you keep the habit.
There's no deadline and no penalty for taking your time. Whatever pace your budget allows, the runway only ever grows toward calm.
